LAYER 1 — ENTITY ESTABLISHMENT

Before AI Can Cite Your Brand, It Needs To Resolve You As An Entity.

AI systems build their picture of your business from scattered data across the web — directory listings, schema blocks, review profiles, knowledge graph entries. When that data is missing or conflicts, AI doesn’t guess in your favor. It skips you and cites competitors with cleaner data. Entity establishment is the foundation layer. Everything else in AI visibility builds on top of it.

Used By Leading agencies and brands

Inconsistent Entity Data Doesn’t Just Confuse Customers. It Confuses AI.

When ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google AI encounters your brand, it pieces together a picture from every source it can find. If your name is listed three different ways, your address is outdated on four directories, or your description contradicts itself across platforms — AI treats these as potentially different entities. It hedges its confidence. It mentions competitors instead.

AI Cross-References Everything

AI systems check dozens of sources per query. When your NAP data or brand description conflicts across platforms, that signals an unverified entity. AI doesn’t cite unverified entities — it skips to the next brand with cleaner data.

Fragmented Entities Dilute Every Signal

Content, links, press mentions — all of your AI visibility work attributes back to one central entity. If that entity is split across inconsistent directory profiles, the signal gets divided. Nothing compounds the way it should.

AI Can’t Distinguish “Typical” Without Explicit Labels

Research shows AI models can’t reliably rank entities within a category without explicit category labeling. If your entity data doesn’t consistently say what you are and where you operate, AI has to infer — and it doesn’t infer in your favor.

The AI Visibility Framework Has Four Layers. This Page Covers the First One.

Everything in AI visibility builds on the entity layer. Strong entity data also feeds Layer 2 — the more consistently AI can resolve your brand, the more confidently it represents you in its training data. But the primary job of this page is Layer 1: making sure AI knows you exist.

Layer 1 - Entity Establishment (Foundation)

AI knows you exist — directory listings, schema, entity resolution. Before AI can cite you, it needs to resolve you as an entity.

Layer 2 - Entity Depth (Brand Visibility)

Entity work feeds this layer too. AI knows who you are accurately. Press, earned media, brand mentions build the training-data signal that determines whether AI considers you at all.

Layer 3 - Category Citation (Category Visibility)

AI recommends you when someone asks for options. Third-party placements on the sites AI actually pulls from for “best X” queries.

Layer 4 - Informational Citation (Authority)

AI cites your content as a trusted source. Structured, expert content on your own site — the pages AI’s premium models query directly.

What Gets Checked

Every layer of your entity data — not just name, address, and phone.

AI doesn’t just read your NAP. It checks schema markup, description language, category classification, author credentials, and whether your profiles actually connect to each other. Our audit process covers all of it.

  • NAP consistency — Name, address, phone checked across directories for exact-match consistency.
  • NAP variation detection — Previous names, address formats, phone variants identified.
  • Schema, SameAs & author markup — SameAs tells AI “this website = these profiles.” Author schema makes content 3x more likely to appear in AI answers. We verify all three.
  • Aggregator status — Foursquare, Data Axle, Neustar Localeze reviewed for accuracy.
  • Citation gap analysis — Platforms competitors are on that you’re not, including AI-verified directories.
  • Duplicate detection — Multiple listings on the same platform split your entity signal.
  • Priority recommendations — Ranked action list. Highest-value fixes first.

Entity Consistency Is Where Everything Compounds From

Before content optimization, before link building, before press — AI needs to resolve your entity with confidence. Start with a $7 audit to see where you stand, or get a free AI Quick Scan that covers all four layers.

Questions

What’s the difference between this and your regular citation products?

The foundation work is the same — building and cleaning directory listings, fixing NAP inconsistencies, ensuring aggregator accuracy. What we’re adding is verified directory targeting (platforms confirmed as cited by AI), an Entity Health Score that benchmarks you against competitors, and schema/SameAs validation. Until those products launch, the core work is available now through Citation Audit, Citation Building, and Citation Cleanup.

The overlap between Google’s top results and AI citations has been declining steadily — multiple independent studies show it dropping significantly over the past year. SEO ranking factors explain only 4–7% of why AI cites one brand over another. Strong SEO is valuable but it’s not a substitute for entity work — AI evaluates entity signals through a different system. What the industry calls GEO or AEO addresses a measurably different set of signals than traditional search optimization.

Google Business Profile, Yelp, BBB, Foursquare, Data Axle, Neustar Localeze, plus industry-specific directories based on your vertical. We also check schema markup, SameAs properties, and author schema.

Entity establishment is Layer 1 of four in our AI Visibility framework. It’s the pre-retrieval layer — before AI can recommend you or cite your content, it needs to resolve you as a known, consistent entity. The 2026 Local Search Ranking Factors survey confirms that local search signals and AI search signals have effectively merged — the same entity work serves both systems.
